A Toronto police constable referred to as the “genesis” of a lengthy corruption investigation has had his bail request denied.

Const. Timothy Barnhardt, 56, was denied bail during a court hearing in Toronto on Friday afternoon. While his defense team requested that he be placed in protective custody, that request was granted. He is set to appear in court again on March 19.

Barnhardt is one of seven police officers arrested this week alongside one retired officer as part of an extensive corruption inquiry conducted by York Regional Police, which has led to numerous charges so far, including conspiracy to commit murder and drug trafficking.

Nineteen civilians were also taken into custody. On Friday, Peel Regional Police announced the suspension of three officers, but no charges have been filed against them at this time.

What we know about the Toronto officers charged in the corruption probe

Seven active Toronto police officers and one retired officer have been arrested in connection to a major corruption probe by police in York Region. CBC’s Greg Ross breaks down what we know about the accused.

Barnhardt faces the most serious charges among those arrested.

This week, York police Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan described Barnhardt as the “genesis” of the investigation. Authorities claim Barnhardt leaked confidential information to criminals, which aided targeted shootings.

He’s also alleged to have supported illegal cannabis shops by taking bribes for protection from police scrutiny and is accused of being involved with cocaine trafficking.

Barnhardt, who lives in Mississauga, faces 17 charges overall, including conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit public mischief, along with multiple drug trafficking charges.

reached out to his lawyer Thursday but hasn’t received a response yet.
