A deadly multi-vehicle accident has led to the closure of eastbound lanes on Highway 401 in Pickering at Whites Road.

A 38-year-old man has lost his life after a pickup truck, driven by someone suspected of being impaired, went the wrong way and crashed into another vehicle on Highway 401 in Pickering early Sunday morning.

The tragic incident took place in the eastbound collector lanes near Westney Road and caused a prolonged closure of the highway.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that they received a call around 2:40 a. m. about a westbound pickup truck driving east on the highway near Salem Road.

Shortly thereafter, the pickup struck a passenger car, and OPP confirmed that the 38-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene.

In contrast, the pickup truck driver, aged 41, was arrested and charged with dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death.

SIU Probes Second Incident

Hours later, another crash occurred nearby involving a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser.

OPP indicated that two officers were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In an additional update, Durham regional police mentioned both officers are β€œin good spirits and will make a full recovery.”

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has initiated an inquiry into this second incident and provided further details in a separate news release on Sunday afternoon.

According to SIU reports, Durham police were assisting OPP by managing traffic as they investigated the first fatal collision.

A cruiser was stationed in the inside left lane while an Ontario Ministry of Transportation support vehicle was adjacent to it in the center lane; behind them were road barricades set up to redirect traffic off the highway onto Brock Road.

Around 4:30 a. m., an eastbound vehicle reportedly drove through these barricades and crashed into the back of the police cruiser.

Besides injuring two officers, a 52-year-old man driving that vehicle was also hospitalized with serious injuries, according to SIU statements.

The agency has assigned two investigators along with two forensic experts to look into this case.

Long Closure Ahead

Both accidents have resulted in all eastbound lanes on Highway 401 at Whites Road being shut down for most of the morning.

By around 12:40 p. m., OPP announced that eastbound lanes at Whites Road had reopened. However, they noted that eastbound collector lanes at Brock Road would remain closed during their investigation.
