Region of Peel – Officers from the Peel Regional Police Hate Crime Unit have arrested and charged a young individual after the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park was vandalized with offensive spray-painted messages.

On Friday, March 20, 2026, police responded to reports of defacement at Chinguacousy Park. When they arrived, officers confirmed the vandalism and quickly assigned the case to the Hate Crime Unit.

After a detailed investigation, a 14‑year‑old boy from Brampton was taken into custody and charged with two counts of Mischief Over $5,000 on Tuesday, March 31. He will need to appear in front of the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

A provision in the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y. C. J. A.) prevents the release of a young person’s name; thus, the identity of this individual remains confidential.

If anyone has information related to this incident, they’re encouraged to reach out to investigators in the Hate Crime Unit at 905-453-2121, extension 6098. Anonymous tips can also be provided by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www. peelcrimestoppers. ca.

QUICK FACTS

Peel Regional Police recently established the Hate Crime Unit – an organized team aimed at improving responses to hate-motivated crimes and incidents that are culturally sensitive. Hate crimes can be reported by calling 905-453-3311 for non-emergencies, dialing 911 for emergencies, or online at peelpolice. ca/onlinereporting.

QUOTE

“Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism – especially hate-motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities. People across the region have the right to feel safe in public spaces. We thank our Hate Crime Unit for acting swiftly to locate and hold those responsible accountable.”

– Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Peel Regional Police
