The mother of a 15-year-old boy who caught fire at a high school in Wingham, Ont., on Tuesday says her son remains in serious critical condition and is asking for prayers as he fights to recover.
The victim’s mother chose not to give an interview but shared through a message that she has felt an overwhelming amount of support, which she greatly appreciates. She urged everyone to remind their children they are loved and to encourage kindness toward others.
She highlighted how serious the situation is and mentioned that the family is taking it one hour at a time.
Emergency services responded after receiving reports of a person on fire at F. E. Madill Secondary School around 8 a. m. on Tuesday. Police confirmed they evacuated the school, situated about 120 kilometers north of London, and put out the flames.
“We responded with emergency services to a report of an individual that was on fire,” said OPP Const. Evan Polini on Tuesday. “That individual was transported by Ornge air ambulance to a trauma centre and is in stable, but critical condition, with life-threatening injuries.”
The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) confirmed that one student was injured in the fire and noted some students witnessed the event.

Both the OPP and AMDSB have not provided new details regarding what may have caused this incident due to an ongoing investigation. However, both organizations warned about a video related to the event circulating on social media, describing it as “disturbing and graphic.”
The board advised against sharing videos or rumors about the incident in a memo sent out to parents which was obtained by.
F. E. Madill has been closed since Wednesday, with students transitioning to online classes. The AMDSB has been providing support for students both online and in-person through its Tragic Events Response Support Team.
The board anticipates reopening the school for staff and students sometime next week after completing assessments by remediation contractors but did not provide an exact date.
