Parents at William Dunbar Public School are frustrated with how the school allegedly managed a hold-and-secure situation after receiving phone threats last week.

Some parents, who claim their kids were left in a portable classroom for hours without supervision, are organizing a rally at the Pickering elementary school this morning.

The school went into a partial lockdown for several hours after threats were received by phone last Tuesday. Durham Police arrived just before noon and cleared the school before lifting the lockdown around 2:20 p. m.

Police have increased their presence at the school and stated there are “several ongoing investigations” related to the threats made against it.

“As a precaution, we will continue to maintain our increased presence in the area and closely monitor activities in and around the school,” said Sgt. Janalyn Dowdle, who emphasized that police do not consider there to be a threat to public safety.

No additional details about the nature of the threats have been shared by police, but many parents took to social media expressing their worries, with some on a Reddit thread fearing that bomb threats had caused the school’s lockdown.

In that thread, several parents assert that children were unsupervised during this incident.

“I have heard the same from my child who is in the portable. The students were left unattended, with the doors unlocked. They were sitting in a corner with all the shutters closed and the lights turned off for almost three hours. This is extremely frustrating,” another parent claimed.

The school and Durham District School Board have not yet commented publicly on this incident, but parents feel that administrators could have handled things better while police conducted their investigation.

INsauga. com has reached out to both the school and district for further comments.
