Hugh valued faith, family, and friendships deeply.
His path in faith was a bit winding as he briefly ventured into Civil Engineering and Transportation Rail. He always had a passion for trains and took pride in his engineering work. He was employed by the Canadian National Railway and the Algoma Central Railway. During his time with the railways, he also served as Lay Reader in various communities where he lived. However, over time, he felt a calling to be more involved in Anglican Church life. After being ordained as Deacon and later as Priest, Hugh became Incumbent at the Anglican Parish of St. Joseph and St. George (located on St. Joseph Island and in Echo Bay, Ontario respectively) until retiring in 2006. Alongside his role as parish priest, he was appointed Archdeacon and collaborated with other churches throughout the Deanery. After retirement, he served as Honorary Assistant at St. Luke’s Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie.
Regarding family, if it weren’t for that detour to the railway town of Capreol, Ontario, his immediate family wouldn’t be what it is today nor would he have gotten used to a lively extended family of in-laws. Yet he embraced it all wholeheartedly. His wife Anna loved him dearly for their 57 years together. He will be missed by his children Heather (David) and Barbara (David), along with his sister Elizabeth Matthews and all of his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from Anna’s side of the family. He took great joy in being grandpa to Anna and David Cragg; uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews (and even some great-greats). He was predeceased by his parents Ellen and Franklin Hamilton from Scarborough, Ontario and by his in-laws Elsie and Dwight Schell from Eastwood, Ontario.
Hugh made friends wherever he went and actively participated in each community he joined. Most recently residing on St. Joseph Island, he engaged with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and offered rides through Trefry Centre’s Volunteer Driver program while he could manage it; plus weekly shopping for the St. Joseph Island & Area Food Bank was part of his routine too. Hugh enjoyed being social; people brought him happiness.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East, 705-759-2522). The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Cathedral (160 Brock Street), officiated by Archbishop Anne Germond. A light lunch will follow at the Cathedral after the service concludes. Interment at Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Jocelyn will be scheduled for a later date yet to be announced.
