Update: On Friday, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation announced that all closures mentioned in this story have been postponed due to weather conditions.
This week, the Niagara-bound QEW Skyway Bridge will experience several short overnight lane closures for rehabilitation work, according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation.
The closures started Tuesday night as per the ministry’s advisory.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry indicated that the following lane closures will be in place for the rest of the week:
Wednesday: All lanes heading towards Niagara will be closed from 10 p. m. until 6 a. m. Thursday.
Thursday: Two out of four lanes will be closed from north of the Skyway Bridge, including the bridge itself, from 9 p. m. until 6 a. m. Friday.
Friday: Similar to Thursday, two out of four lanes will be closed from north of the Skyway Bridge, including the bridge, from 9 p. m. until 6 a. m. Saturday.
The ministry also expects two right lanes to close between Sunday and Monday night from 11 p. m. until 6 a. m.
All lane closures may change depending on weather conditions, as stated by the ministry.
During these closures, access from Eastport Drive / collector lanes to the bridge will not be available. However, all ramps at Northshore Boulevard Interchange will stay open while Eastport Drive remains fully accessible as an alternative route back onto QEW heading toward Niagara.
The rehabilitation efforts on QEW Burlington Bay Skyway kicked off in May 2024 and include:
Removal and replacement of concrete barrier walls on both sides of the Niagara bound bridge. Concrete deck repair. Waterproofing for bridge deck. Deck drainage enhancements. New asphalt paving.
The ministry also noted additional construction activities such as widening one lane on QEW approaching the bridge starting north of Northshore Boulevard along with realignment for north to south on-ramps, installation of new overhead sign structures, introducing a new Burlington Lift Bridge notification system featuring variable message signs, and upgrades for lighting.
<p"The rehabilitation work is nearing completion," says the ministry,"with final tasks continuing in upcoming months." The short overnight closures are deemed necessary "to complete line painting and staging of the bridge deck in preparation for construction this season."
