Kitchener’s Transit Hub Revamp Moves Forward with New Phases

The Region of Waterloo has given the green light for a multi-phase plan to redevelop the old Charles Street Terminal site in Kitchener. The future vision for this area includes creating community spaces, public areas, connections to transit and Victoria Park, along with new affordable and market rate housing.

Right now, the site is being set up for more technical work, with fencing going up around the property.

A phased approach allows for the site to be redeveloped in sections over time, which helps to:

reduce upfront costs and financial risk for future development partners make it easier to deliver some community priorities sooner allow the project to respond to changing market conditions

The Region of Waterloo and City of Kitchener have gathered feedback through community pop-ups, public open houses, collaborative design workshops, small group discussions and online surveys. Insights from Indigenous communities, downtown residents, local businesses and youth advisors have influenced the project’s direction.

kitchener terminal planResidents expressed that they want community uses on the site sooner rather than later. Regional staff are looking into partnerships with non-profits and community organizations to introduce these uses in Phase 1.

“Thank you to the community for the thoughtful input they have provided throughout this process,” said Karen Redman, regional chair. “Having many perspectives to shape this project has been invaluable and ensures we are on the right path forward as we move into the next phase of redevelopment.”
