On Sunday, April 19, 2026, at about 1:50 a. m. EST, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with emergency teams, responded to reports of a crash involving a pickup truck on Highway 11-17 near Spruce River Road in Shuniah.

The driver, a 46-year-old man from Thunder Bay and the only person in the vehicle, was later declared dead.

Several lanes on Highway 11-17 were shut down between Spruce River Road and Terry Fox Lookout Road while OPP members, including Technical Collision Investigation and Reconstruction teams, worked on their investigation. All lanes have now reopened.

If you have any information or video related to this incident, please contact the Thunder Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at ontariocrimestoppers. ca.
