The City of Hamilton has sent out 500 pieces of equipment and staff to deal with the storm. They’re asking residents to stay home if they can. Fewer cars on the roads will help them clear the snow more effectively.

The roads were in rough shape today, visibility was low, but snow plows and crews were working hard to manage the storm that hit.

“We focus on clearing the main routes in the city, especially around escarpment crossings,” said Mike Field from Hamilton Public Works.

Environment Canada issued an orange level weather warning due to the expected snowfall over the next 24 hours.

The City is urging people not to park on the street and recommends shoveling driveway snow onto lawns instead of onto the streets.

“We’re experiencing a significant amount of snowfall, which means we’ll have some challenges keeping up with it operationally,” Field explained.

“We prefer to wait for all plows to go through so we can handle the windrows at each driveway,” said Kris Vandershee.

Vandershee runs a snow removal service with plows operating in Hamilton, Dundas, Binbrook, Ancaster, and Caledonia. He’s been busy lately; his schedule is full for the season, only taking emergency requests now.

“The biggest storm we dealt with was during winter 2022. That was a huge event when we got about a foot of snow, shutting down much of the city,” Vandershee recalled.

Most people CHCH News spoke with in Ancaster today said that while snowy conditions aren’t ideal, they’ve managed well. They pull out their shovels and get things done. However, one family’s plans for a wedding might be disrupted.

Nobody wants to deal with snow on what should be an easy day like Josh Windsor usually has when he just clears his driveway and moves on. But today’s different-he’s worried about how 25 family members will make it to Mexico for a major life event.

“I’m supposed to go to Mexico tomorrow. Our flight got cancelled. We’re not sure what’s going to happen,” said Windsor.

For Chrystal Welsh down the street, she isn’t fond of snow but enjoys reminiscing about past winters with her kids.

“I don’t love snow but I’m enjoying this because I have two younger kids and I remember all the fun we had playing in it when I was younger,” Welsh shared.
