What started as an investigation into a stolen pick-up truck by the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) ended with an arrest made by the Guelph police canine unit.
At around 3:10 p. m. on Wednesday, WRPS received a report about a 2021 Dodge Ram pick-up that had been stolen from a driveway in the Laurentian West area of Kitchener.
The credit cards left inside the truck were used throughout the region later that afternoon.
Then, at approximately 6:15 p. m., while police were still looking into the theft, they got word that the truck was involved in a break-and-enter near Old Country Drive and Strasburg Road.
Officers spotted the vehicle while responding but it sped away quickly.
<p About an hour and a half later, authorities found the suspect vehicle in Elmira and managed to disable it so it could not be driven anymore.
The driver fled on foot, but officers from WRPS’ Neighbourhood Policing and Emergency Response Team, along with Guelph Police Service’s Canine Unit and Ontario Provincial Police, conducted a search and arrested him shortly after.
The investigation uncovered identity documents, tools for breaking in, and drugs.
A 31-year-old man from Kitchener is facing multiple criminal charges including:
Possession of stolen property over $5,000 Possession of stolen property under $5,000 Possession of identity documents Break and enter – commit theft Possession of break-in tools Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance (three counts) Operation while prohibited Dangerous operation
Authorities state that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
