For the past few weeks, Waterloo Region has been dealing with chilly temperatures, but that might change soon.
Beginning on Monday, we can expect some notable shifts in temperature. Denise Andrecchi, a weather specialist at 570 News Radio, mentioned that Monday’s high will be around -9 C, and it’s expected to reach zero degrees on Tuesday.
“What we’re really watching are these temperatures beginning to stabilize and a more seasonal weather pattern moving into Kitchener for what seems to be for the rest of February,” said Andrecchi.
The warmer conditions are likely to continue over the next week to ten days before colder air returns towards late February or early March.
The average daytime temperature for February in Waterloo Region is typically -3 C, while nighttime averages drop to about -12 C.
A bit of snow is also forecasted starting overnight into Tuesday morning. The rest of the week looks warmer, with Environment Canada predicting highs in the single digits below zero and a mix of sun and clouds as we approach the weekend.
Lately, yellow cold warnings have dominated our weather updates as temperatures plunged into the -20s C but felt even colder with wind chill making it seem like they were in the -30s range.
Geoff Coulson from Environment Canada noted that persistent air flow from the high Arctic has been affecting southern and eastern Ontario since mid-January.
“So this particular stretch of cold weather has been long-lived for the area. If there is any good news, it is the fact that the weather pattern is now breaking down, and it looks like a return to more seasonal temperatures is on tap,” said Coulson.
Coulson also pointed out that despite multiple yellow cold warnings issued recently, no records were broken for cold temperatures since 1879.
“We did dip down to -25 to -27 area over the last couple of days, certainly much colder than normal. But based on that long period of record going back into the 1800’s, no new records were set for the area.”
