THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper has announced that it will stop producing newsprint, impacting as many as 150 employees.
The company will continue to operate its single-line softwood kraft pulp mill and will generate renewable energy to sell to the grid.
This decision to cease newsprint operations in the first quarter of this year follows attempts to adapt within a shrinking newsprint market.
According to Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper’s CEO Norm Bush, demand for newsprint in North America has dropped by 40 percent since Atlas Holdings acquired the company in 2022.
Bush states that this decline in demand is the biggest factor behind the choice to halt newsprint production in Thunder Bay.
The company is collaborating with local unions and government entities at all levels to provide affected workers with access to job transition resources, retraining programs, and other essential support.
