WARNING: This story contains disturbing details about gruesome deaths and sexual abuse.

A man from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) in northwestern Ontario has been sentenced to five life terms for the tragic deaths of a woman and four children in a house fire that occurred nearly seven years ago.

The fire took place in the remote Oji-Cree community, located about 580 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, on May 2, 2019.

This incident resulted in the deaths of:

Geraldine Chapman, 47. Shyra Chapman, 6. Hailey Chapman, 7. Karl Cutfeet, 9. Angel Mc Kay, 12.

The Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and Office of the Chief Coroner determined that smoke inhalation caused their deaths.

Archie Mc Kay, Geraldine’s partner at times, was charged in December 2020 with five counts of first-degree murder. In April 2025, he was found guilty of five counts of second-degree murder related to these fatalities.

Geraldine and Mc Kay were Shyra’s biological parents. The other children who died were under Geraldine’s care at the time of the fire.

Justice John S. Fregeau issued Mc Kay’s sentence at the Superior Court of Justice in Kenora on Monday.

The court learned that Mc Kay started the fire by blocking the only exit to the old wood-frame home during the night “knowing children were asleep inside” and used an accelerant, Fregeau stated.

The devastating fire led KI to declare a state of emergency due to its mental health impact on residents. At that time, there was no fire department available in the First Nation community.

Fregeau noted that Mc Kay made false statements about what transpired on that night when discussing his case.

The judge also highlighted Mc Kay’s history involving domestic violence against both Geraldine Chapman and a previous partner. Court hears about Mc Kay’s ‘appalling life circumstances’ When sentencing an Indigenous individual for a crime in Canada, courts must consider their background-known as Gladue factors-and how these may have influenced their interactions with the justice system.

Fregeau elaborated on Mc Kay’s “appalling life circumstances,” which include experiencing alcohol abuse and domestic violence from a young age.

The court heard how as a child, Mc Kay suffered sexual abuse by a male cousin as well as Ralph Rowe-a former Anglican minister who victimized numerous First Nation children during the ’70s and ’80s-according to Fregeau.

This trauma led him to start sniffing gasoline regularly at age 11 for five years until he stopped at age 16 due to hallucinations caused by it.

“This was followed by lifelong polysubstance abuse set against the backdrop of chronic poverty, inadequate education, very limited employment opportunities,” Fregeau mentioned regarding his struggles along with “volatile domestic relationships” and recurrent intimate partner violence.”</pp

“It cannot be reasonably argued that the background circumstances of this Indigenous offender did not play a significant role in bringing him before the court.”</pp

However, Fregeau emphasized that while Mc Kay’s past experiences are tragic; they do not lessen how serious his crimes are.”</pp

“Given the defendant does not accept any level of responsibility for issues within his life nor for offences before this court,” he added,” he is assessed as high risk for reoffending.”</pp

“When he addressed this court during sentencing hearing,” Fregeau remarked,” he showed no remorse or acceptance regarding his actions leading to those horrific deaths or any concern for their family or community impact.”</pp

The judge decided that despite this lack of remorse should not be treated as an aggravating factor affecting his sentence.”</pp

No matter what happens next though; it’ll still mean serving at least twenty-five years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.”</pp
