A man from Toronto has been taken into custody by the Hanover Police Service for using stolen credit cards to buy tires from several dealerships.
The police were alerted on February 25 by a woman in Saskatchewan, who reported that her stolen credit card had been used to purchase eight new truck tires at a dealership in Hanover on that same day.
After looking into the case, investigators found out that the suspect had arranged the purchase over the phone and intended to collect the tires later. On February 27, officers in plain clothes waited at the dealership and arrested the 27-year-old man from Toronto.
A search warrant was executed on a U-Haul van rented by the suspect, leading to the discovery of eight more tires, which were confirmed as purchased with stolen credit cards and fake Ontario driver’s licenses from another dealership in Listowel and one in Elmira.
The suspect was subsequently remanded into custody during his bail hearing and faces charges of fraud under $5000, unlawful use of a credit card, and possession of property obtained through crime.
This investigation is still active as police believe this individual, along with others, has committed similar offenses elsewhere in Ontario.
