Don Cherry’s Missing Order of Canada Sparks Outrage

It seems like everyone in MAGA Alberta, eager to break away from Canada and perhaps join the circus down south, is suddenly upset that Don Cherry hasn’t received an Order of Canada!

An order of Canada lapel pin, apparently a puzzle to some MAGA Albertans (Photo: Defence Medals. ca).

Is it just me, or does this seem a bit odd?

Regardless, this might be the most ridiculous political story to come out of Alberta in at least ten years, which is saying something.

This situation has all the elements of an Alberta tale. The federal Conservative Party started a petition insisting that Mr. Cherry receive Canada’s highest civilian honor. This petition has been backed by none other than Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre, who represents Battle River-Crowfoot.

Former journalist Andrew Lawton, now the Conservative MP for Elgin-St. Thomas-London South in Ontario, actually put forward the nomination – as any Canadian citizen can do – even though the online petition on the Conservative Party’s site suggests that everyone who signs is making a nomination.

But that’s not true. However, anyone leaving their email address will probably end up with some fundraising emails from Mr. Poilievre.

Meanwhile, Premier Danielle “I’m-Clearly-Fighting-for-Canada” Smith-the province’s leading supporter of separatism-jumped on board to promote Mr. Cherry as well. He’s also oddly known as Grapes.* “Don Cherry is a Canadian icon, a hockey legend and is loved by Albertans,” she claimed with obvious exaggeration.

“He’s not just one of the greats; his word and opinion about our national sport are still seen as hockey gospel by millions of Canadians,” she continued, implying that anything less than being awarded Companion of the Order of Canada would be simply unacceptable.

An Edmonton Postmedia ist lamented that “for far too many years, Don Cherry has been snubbed by the establishment types in this country who look down their noses at us elites.” A few hyphens here could have made this easier to understand; however, if you read it enough times you’ll get what Rick Bell meant.

“If you are against such recognition, you can call yourself a Canadian patriot but you’re really just a leftist chauvinist,” complained hockey writer David Staples on social media while sounding like he wished he were discussing politics instead. “If Canada can’t honour Don Cherry, what good is this country?”

Indeed! What good is Canada without sour old Grapes flaunting an Order of Canada lapel pin on one of his flashy sports jackets? (One gets the feeling we’re headed into a What-Have-the-Romans-Ever-Done-for-Us moment here. Instead of going over familiar points again, I’ll leave it at that since I think we all know how absurd those kinds of statements tend to be.)

Thanks to cheerleading like this-which anyone visiting social media can see-Wild Rose MAGA has certainly gotten itself worked up over this issue. It does have some sort of poetic consistency considering it’s likely one of the silliest wedge issues ever attempted by Conservatives.

Remember these same folks were recently panicking over Mark Carney’s Order of Canada lapel pin? They speculated wildly about possible connections between him and secret organizations like the Bavarian Illuminati or even local groups like Tofield Lodge Elks before he appeared at a World Economic Forum meeting and gave a speech.

Well, they’ve certainly learned something now.

Many commentators online-and apparently Mr. Poilievre’s strategic team-don’t seem to realize that it’s actually up to Canada’s Governor General to decide who joins the Order based on recommendations from an independent advisory council that’s non-partisan. Asking the prime minister about it isn’t helpful because he doesn’t have any say in it.

The Prime Minister’s Office acknowledged how things work but wisely chose not to comment further on this issue.

Appointments are intended to recognize individuals who make significant contributions to our nation.” Whether calling climate change believers “cuckaloos” counts as contributing positively depends largely on perspective.

Mr. Ch erry ’s commentary on hockey has often strayed well beyond sports enough for him to be labeled as a right-wing oddball. For instance , h e once criticized music , declaring that anyone disagreeing with his views on t he national anthem was also left-wing weirdos.

He backed t he U. S. invasion o f Iraq back i n 2003 – which turned out poorly. He supported late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford , which we can now apply t o him too. Plus , h e notoriously accused immigrants coming into Canada o f not wearing poppies before Remembrance Day despite having no evidence for such claims whatsoever; he refused apologies for this remark leading Sportsnet t o fire him i n 2019.

Though November feels long ago , images showing Mr. Ch erry within t he party webpage featuring Lawton’s petition depict him prominently displaying his poppy; c onsidering circumstances surrounding things nowadays leads one t o see this action potentially signaling certain ideas politically speaking.

Even among conservatives outside Alberta there seems more skepticism arising regarding whether pursuing this particular wedge serves them well considering recent events ; Quebec Conservative MP Pierre Paul-Hus coolly noted regarding Mr. Cherry ’s “unacceptable remarks toward Quebec nation & francophones,” stating awarding him recognition wouldn’t be wise decision overall.”

However don’t expect every member within CPC ’s Alberta Caucus taking pause from jumping aboard support train towards supporting Cherry nonetheless !*There’s likely confusion around terms used within sports communities linking grapes & cherries; differences exist mainly due t o various factors involved including shape/size etc… Raisins would surely add humor level while remaining age appropriate.
