RIVERTON, Utah (KUTV) – Authorities have revealed the identity of the man who was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 15 in Draper.

Branden Scott Markham, 36, was flown to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to injuries following a shooting that took place just south of Bangerter Highway on Tuesday.

MORE | Man killed in incident with Riverton police:

Markham was reportedly seated in the passenger side of the vehicle when Riverton police conducted the stop. Officials stated they observed that Markham had a firearm. When instructed to relinquish the weapon, Markham allegedly refused, leading to an altercation outside of the vehicle.

During this confrontation, Markham was shot by an officer from the Riverton Police Department and subsequently transported to the hospital. Authorities confirmed his death on Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle, Shawn Michael Shalosky, was taken into custody.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
