A 32-year-old man from Walpole Island First Nation is facing charges related to the first homicide in Lambton County this year.
The Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia has confirmed that Cody Roegiest is charged with second-degree murder, using a firearm with intent, and having a firearm without authorization.
Roegiest was taken into custody on New Year’s Day after officers from Lambton OPP and Walpole Island Police responded to reports of a disturbance involving a gun on Squirrel Island Road.
When they arrived, officers found a 29-year-old who appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds; unfortunately, they were declared dead at the scene.
Initially, police indicated that one person had been arrested without any issues. However, since that time, OPP has not released any additional details about the victim or the accused.
The Ontario Court of Justice announced that Roegiest is set to appear in Sarnia court again on Friday, January 9 for a bail hearing.
