A snowfall warning has been issued for parts of the GTA, with heavy snow expected to arrive late this morning.

Drivers in various areas of the Greater Toronto Area might encounter tricky travel conditions today as a wave of heavy snow sweeps through from late this morning into the afternoon.

Weather experts indicate that short bursts of intense snowfall could rapidly worsen road conditions, causing visibility to drop significantly during the heaviest snowfall.

In Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton, snowfall rates may hit 2 to 4 centimetres per hour, with total accumulations anticipated to reach between 5 to 8 centimetres before the system moves out.

Regions north of Toronto, such as Caledon, Vaughan, and Durham Region, could see even heavier snow. Total amounts might range from 10 to 15 centimetres, with snowfall rates at times reaching up to 5 centimetres per hour.

Though overall snowfall totals aren’t deemed extreme, officials caution that fast accumulation could quickly blanket roads and highways, making travel slippery and potentially hazardous throughout the day.

The snow is likely to let up later this afternoon and change over to rain showers as temperatures rise above freezing.

However, this improvement may not last long.

As temperatures drop again overnight, wet roads and sidewalks might freeze over again, creating icy conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.

Residents across the area are advised to prepare for swiftly changing travel conditions and allow extra time for their commutes as this weather system passes through southern Ontario today.
