Authorities have charged a man with attempted murder after a shooting involving police in Burlington earlier this month.
The incident occurred on March 8 at around 12:30 a. m. following a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Crestwood motel, according to the Halton Regional Police Service.
At the time, there were two individuals in the vehicle, and as officers approached, there was an “interaction” between them and the driver, police stated.
Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit reported that the driver “drove towards officers,” prompting one officer to fire “numerous” shots that hit the driver multiple times.
The 23-year-old man was taken by paramedics to a Hamilton hospital where he stabilized. He has since been released from the hospital and is being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
While an SIU investigation into the shooting continues, Halton police have charged him with attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of fentanyl, a controlled substance.
The name of the accused hasn’t been disclosed yet.
A team of five investigators along with two forensic specialists and one collision reconstructionist are handling this case. The SIU urges anyone with information or any video footage to reach out to the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at www. siu. on. ca/en/appeals. php.
