The Ford Motor Company is growing its presence in Oakville with a new large stamping plant.
The renovation of the Ford Oakville Assembly Plant, located at 1400 The Canadian Rd., involves completely changing the facility from assembling gas vehicles to making Electric Vehicles.
Ford mentioned in a press release that this initiative sets the stage for introducing multi-energy technology in the next generation of F-Series Super Duty trucks, allowing customers more options and supporting Ford’s plans for electrification.
The plant stopped production of the Ford Edge in May 2024.
In an application submitted to the Town of Oakville, Ford detailed plans for “a new, 26,800-square-metre part stamping facility on an existing concrete pad, which previously held a paint facility on the site. The former building has now been demolished.”
A 2024 press release from Ford indicated that the company intended to invest $2.3 billion (part of a total $3 billion investment) to set up assembly and integrated stamping operations at the Oakville Assembly Complex.
TOWN OF OAKVILLE – In an application submitted to the Town of Oakville, Ford described plans for a new, 26,800-square-metre part stamping facility on an existing concrete pad that once housed a paint facility on-site.
Initially, back in October 2020, both the Ontario and federal governments pledged $295 million each as part of a $1.8 billion investment by Ford aimed at modernizing the plant for EV and battery pack assembly.
Fast forward to 2024 when Ford revealed it would shift focus towards producing F-Series Super Duty trucks starting in 2026. This decision was partly driven by demand that U. S. facilities can’t meet.
This revised plan means that the EV battery pack assembly line won’t be installed as initially planned; however, modernization efforts continue to transform the plant into a state-of-the-art stamping and assembly complex.
In a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document from the Town of Oakville addressing why this facility is being built by Ford, they responded with: “This construction supports the Ford+ Plan for profitable growth, including maximizing Ford’s manufacturing footprint, extending global truck leadership and expanding Ford Pro commercial business.”
The Ford+ Plan is a strategy focused on growth that combines current and new capabilities to create customer-focused experiences while increasing value and speeding up its transition towards electric vehicles.
The FAQ document further explains manufacturing methods as “in a conventional automotive stamping facility; manufacturing methods involve transforming metal blanks into intricate automotive components through processes such as blanking, high-pressure stamping with dies, trimming, forming and thorough quality inspections often supported by advanced technologies and automation.”
Once production kicks off, Ford stated that the Oakville plant will have capacity for producing up to 100,000 units of Super Duty pickups every year.
Construction began last summer and is expected to wrap up in 2026 with production likely starting later that same year.
A banner displayed at the project site indicates that Ellis Don, Walters Group and Walbridge are handling construction while showing support from International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793 members involved in this effort.
Ford estimates that about 1,800 jobs will be created at the Oakville Assembly Complex due to this new Super Duty assembly plant.
“Our economy relies heavily on auto manufacturing here in Oakville and throughout Ontario. Along QEW near Ford Drive you can witness ongoing changes at the Oakville Assembly Plant thanks to this new stamping facility. Our team is collaborating closely with Ford to ensure they meet all deadlines so we can see those first trucks rolling off production lines next year,” stated officials from the Town of Oakville Mayor’s office.
With construction visibly underway it seems like concerns over U. S. tariffs affecting Canada’s automotive sector aren’t impacting this project much.
However, representatives from Ford declined to comment regarding any tariff-related issues.
“At this time we do not have any updates or information available to share. We appreciate your interest and will be sure to contact you should any news become available,” said Kamran Niazi from communications at Ford Canada.
