Essex MPP Anthony Leardi describes it as “taking money from criminals and putting it to work to protect law-abiding citizens.”
The Ontario government is committing $270,614 over three years to the La Salle Police Service. This funding comes from the Proceeds of Crime Grant Program.
“This investment will give La Salle Police more tools to keep our communities safe and strengthen security along the Detroit River,” Leardi added.
The funds will back Project Birds Eye, an initiative that provides La Salle Police with four drones to monitor the shoreline of the Detroit River in La Salle. Along with these drones, the police service will increase marine patrols on the river, improving their ability to respond to incidents and maintain a police presence on the water.
“Using proceeds of crime to protect our community is a meaningful way to ensure that those who break the law help pay for the safety of La Salle residents,” said Police Chief Michael Pearce.
The Proceeds of Crime Grant Program supports police services across Ontario in reinvesting funds forfeited to the Crown, aiming to tackle local public safety issues, prevent crime, and enhance law enforcement.
