A man was found dead following an incident at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus, which led to a shelter-in-place alert, according to officials.
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, provided an update Tuesday morning regarding the situation, which they indicated was connected to a reported assault in Brampton.
The SIU stated that on Monday afternoon, police received a 911 call about a man who had assaulted a woman in Brampton.
Officers attempted to track down and apprehend the suspect.
After 9 p. m., authorities located the man at a student residence in the UTM area, as per the SIU’s report.
“A gunshot was heard and the man was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was pronounced deceased early this morning,” noted the SIU.
“There have been no other reported injuries and there is no threat to public safety.”
The individual was 19 years old.
The SIU mentioned that since officers were present at or near the scene when the man died, they were informed and activated their mandate.

The University of Toronto announced that classes would be canceled at UTM for Tuesday.
“U of T Mississauga campus (UTM) is open Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026; however classes are canceled out of fairness and compassion for over 2,000 residents and students affected by last night’s events,” stated an update from the university earlier on Tuesday.
“Employees who also had to shelter in place last night will take necessary time for their wellbeing.”
The university had issued an emergency alert instructing students and staff to stay indoors and shelter in place.
“We have received reports of police activity at Mc Luhan Court residence located at 3330 Residence Road,” said U of T in its alert. “Shelter in place until further instructions are given. Emergency responders have been notified and are on site.”
An update shared by police around 11:45 p. m. confirmed it was an “isolated incident” confined to one residential unit with no injuries reported.
Authorities advised people to avoid that area temporarily.
Around 2 a. m., police reported that the incident had been “resolved” without any ongoing threat to public safety.
“Last night, reports emerged regarding police activity at Mc Luhan Court residence leading UTM to issue a campus lock-down and shelter-in-place alert,” said U of T officials.
“With assistance from Peel Regional Police, residents of Mc Luhan Court were relocated safely within campus grounds allowing law enforcement to isolate and manage this situation effectively. The shelter-in-place alert has since been lifted, enabling most residents’ return.”
