Mark Gordon sat silently in the prisoner’s box of a crowded courtroom in Oshawa on Tuesday as a judge handed down a sentence of two concurrent life terms without the chance for parole for 21 years. This was due to his involvement in the fatal shootings of a teacher from Bowmanville and her ex-husband, who previously played for the Oshawa Generals hockey team.
Gordon entered a guilty plea to two counts of second-degree murder in September 2025, admitting that on July 13, 2024, he shot multiple times at 42-year-old Patrick Montgomery right outside his home on Glenforest Street in Oshawa while Patrick’s 12-year-old son looked on.
The details reveal that around noon that day, Gordon drove down the street, knocked on Patrick’s door, and approached him. The boy recognized Gordon as the man living in the basement suite at his mother’s house.
Montgomery came outside and spoke with Gordon for about 15 minutes before the boy peeked out to see Gordon aiming a handgun at his father. He heard Patrick plead, “please don’t,” just before Gordon fired several shots at him. In total, Patrick was hit nine times, including four shots to his back.

“As he left, he looked at (the boy) who put his hands up, believing he was going to be shot,” according to court records.
Afterward, Gordon got into his pickup truck and drove about 400 meters down Glenforest Street to where Andrieana Montgomery, Patrick’s ex-wife and mother of their two children, rented an upstairs unit.
Upon exiting his truck, he opened fire on Andrieana while she stood at the sink washing dishes and looking out the front window. He discharged six shots from outside before entering her home and firing three more rounds. Andrieana sustained four gunshot wounds including one to her head.
Gordon lived in the basement apartment beneath Andrieana’s main floor unit with his partner and their young son. Their relationship had been quite strained.

The months leading up to July 13, 2024 were filled with arguments about noise issues between both units. During one heated exchange in winter 2023, Gordon mentioned having a gun.
This was true; he owned a Glock 17 gen 5 semi-automatic handgun along with some rifles that were securely stored in a metal safe within his unit. He held a valid possession and acquisition license for these firearms.
The mention of having a firearm made Andrieana feel threatened. She reported excessive noise coming from Gordon’s basement suite to their landlord and expressed concern over his gun ownership. Andriena shared her worries about this conflict with her children aged ten and twelve as well as family members and friends.

The records indicate that Andriena told her kids not to trust Gordon because he wasn’t nice and she felt afraid of him.
On May 8, 2024, she reached out to the City of Oshawa claiming that legal requirements weren’t being met for basement suites where they lived. The city then contacted their landlord regarding these violations offering potential solutions for resolution.
This prompted the landlord to move forward with evicting Gordon from the basement suite where he resided with his girlfriend and her three-year-old child. On July 12, 2024, an eviction notice was served against him.
The next day marked when he shot both Montgomerys during what Madam Justice Michelle Fuerst described as an incredibly violent incident where Gordon knew two children would be left parentless after these acts.
“The callousness of his decision to act as he did in light of that knowledge is immense,” Fuerst remarked during proceedings.

A pre-sentence report revealed that as tensions grew between himself and Andrieana Montgomery over time; Gordon perceived himself as being “bullied” by her which contributed greatly towards escalating matters further than they should have gone.
He also claimed within this same report that receiving an eviction notice acted like “the last straw” leading him down this path toward violence.
