A man from Corunna is back in court, just a little over a month after it was decided he would undergo another trial regarding the death of his common-law wife.
In a ruling made public on Friday, September 25, Ontario’s Appeal Court overturned the 2023 acquittal of Shawn Trowbridge, which followed a six-week trial and two days of jury discussions.
Trowbridge had been found not guilty in the late 2020 death of Cheryl Van Huizen.
While Crown prosecutors sought a new trial for first-degree murder, a five-judge panel determined that Trowbridge will instead be retried for manslaughter, changing the legal standard about consent to harm during sexual activities.
Trowbridge is set to make a preliminary court appearance in Sarnia on October 27, with an official trial date likely to be scheduled on November 20.
