A man from Corunna is back in court, just a little over a month after it was decided he would stand trial again in connection with the death of his common-law wife.
On Friday, September 25, Ontario’s Appeal Court announced its decision to overturn the 2023 acquittal of Shawn Trowbridge, which came after a six-week trial and two days of jury discussions.
Trowbridge had previously been found not guilty in the death of Cheryl Van Huizen in late 2020.
While Crown prosecutors sought a new trial for first-degree murder, a panel of five judges determined that Trowbridge will instead face retrial on manslaughter charges, changing the legal standard about consent to harm during sexual activity.
Trowbridge is set to make a preliminary court appearance in Sarnia on October 27, with an official trial date likely to be established on November 20.
