Starting Monday, four reactors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station will begin shutting down as a huge $26.8-billion refurbishment project kicks off.
The aim is to upgrade the reactors so they can operate for an additional 38 years, generating enough electricity for 2.2 million homes.
The units will be offline for about ten years, with actual refurbishment work set to start in January.
This project involves replacing 1,520 fuel channels and 48 boilers, along with constructing a 1.5-kilometre deep-water intake.
Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce mentioned that the refurbishment will create 30,500 jobs and that most of the expenses will stay within Ontario.
Environment Defence has raised concerns about how this project might increase Ontario’s dependency on natural gas while the reactors are out of service.
