The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of Ontario is looking into the death of a 48-year-old man in Whitby. The SIU stepped in because officers from the Durham Regional Police Service were present during the incident that led to his passing.
As reported by the SIU, which is an independent agency that reviews events involving police and civilians resulting in serious injury or death, police tried to serve an arrest warrant for a man around 8:30 p. m. last week. When he saw the officers, he threatened to harm himself with a weapon and locked himself inside.
After gaining entry, the police found him unresponsive and despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A team made up of three investigators and two forensic experts has been assigned to look into this case.
The SIU encourages anyone with information regarding this investigation, including any videos or photos, to reach out to the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu. on. ca/en/appeals. php
