A brand-new recreation complex in Brooklin, which boasts Durham’s largest swimming pool, a twin-pad arena, a multi-purpose gymnasium, and the biggest outdoor cluster of pickleball courts in Ontario, is set to celebrate its grand opening on September 12.
Described as the “most significant” recreation initiative in Whitby’s history, the $155 million Fieldgate Sports Complex is located on the west side of Baldwin Street, just south of Highway 407. This project has come together after years of planning, community input, and collaboration aimed at meeting Whitby’s growing population and changing recreational needs. According to Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy, once it’s fully operational, it will become a central hub for recreation, sports, wellness, and community engagement for future generations.
“The Fieldgate Sports Complex isn’t just another facility – it reflects our community’s vision for what lies ahead,” remarked Roy. She expressed her excitement about the project nearing completion. “Whitby residents and local sports organizations played a crucial role in shaping this project from day one. On September 12 we’ll celebrate a space that was truly created by the community for the community.”
The town plans to mark the grand opening with a free event that includes family-friendly activities, displays from community partners, and chances to explore both indoor and outdoor amenities at the complex.
Whitby CAO Matt Gaskell emphasized that the grand opening will be “an opportunity to recognize the tremendous effort that brought this project to life.”
“From residents and sports user groups to project partners along with staff and contractors-countless individuals contributed to making this vision a reality. We can’t wait to open our doors on September 12 and witness how the Fieldgate Sports Complex will positively impact our community for years ahead.”

The facilities include a twin-pad arena, an aquatics center with various features including a double gymnasium complete with walking track. Additionally, there are spaces designed for programs along with numerous outdoor amenities like sports fields, pickleball courts as well as tennis courts, basketball courts, a skatepark and even a pump track.
The final touches such as equipment installation, staff training sessions and site preparations will continue through summer leading up to the grand opening on September 12.
