A man from Brampton is facing charges after police reported that several individuals were firing rifles and handguns close to a family cabin in Ontario’s lake area.
The OPP stated that the incident took place on Sept. 5 when officers from the Huntsville detachment were alerted about multiple people shooting firearms in a sand and gravel pit near an Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trail in the Township of Lake of Bays, about 76 kilometres north of Orillia.
Authorities mentioned that the shooters were using a skeet thrower and were “in close proximity to a nearby family cabin.”
An investigation led police to discover a rifle classified as a prohibited firearm under federal regulations, which remains subject to the federal firearm amnesty program until Oct. 30.
This firearm has been prohibited since 2024, according to police.
According to the OPP, Amandeep Singh Waring, 45, of Brampton has been charged with possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition and breach of firearms regulation – store firearm or restricted weapon.
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on Nov. 24.
“The OPP takes firearms incidents very seriously and behaviour that compromises the safety and security of our communities will not be tolerated,” police said regarding this incident. “Members of the public who utilize public lands must familiarize themselves with The Public Lands Act, which governs the management and use of public lands and forests, formerly referred to as crown lands, in Ontario.”
