A group of energy partners has been given the go-ahead to launch a battery energy storage system project in Norfolk County.
Ownership partners Aecon Concessions, Six Nations Group, the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation, Sitka Power Inc. and NRStor have signed an energy storage facility agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to build, own and manage a 150 MW/1,200 MWh battery energy storage system.
This 20-year agreement will allow the partnership to receive capacity payments from the IESO, along with extra income from electricity sold into the province’s grid.
“The Simcoe Battery Project will strengthen grid reliability and support the integration of renewable generation, helping to provide the resilient energy foundation and critical storage capacity required to support economic growth and meet Ontario’s growing electricity demand,” said Stee Nackan, president of Aecon Concession.
Aecon, along with Six Nation Group and Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation were part of a partnership that built and now operates the Oneida Energy Storage Project near Jarvis which began operations in May 2025.
The four-hectare (10-acre) Oneida site is Canada’s largest battery energy storage system, valued at $700 million and capable of providing 250 MW of electricity per hour – for four hours – to the province’s grid.
The Simcoe battery energy storage system is expected to start operations in 2030.
