This week, residents of Oshawa can get free trees on a first come, first served basis through an annual event put together by the Oshawa Environmental Advisory Committee.
To receive one free tree, registration is required. The online form will be available from Monday, Aug. 17 to Friday, Aug. 21, aiming to help expand Oshawa’s tree canopy.
Three types of trees are offered:
White Pine – a native tree species that thrives in most parts of Ontario and eastern Canada. Sugar Maple – known as Canada’s national tree, the Sugar Maple is a large deciduous tree featuring yellowish-green leaves. Burr Oak – this oak species is common in Ontario and grows throughout southern Ontario and along the borders with Minnesota and Manitoba in northwestern Ontario.
Those who register need to be ready to pick up their tree on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 12 or provide the name of someone who will collect it for them during registration.
The online registration form will be open for several days; however, trees will be given out based on the order of registration. After the registration period ends, all registrants will receive updates about their submission status via email or phone (depending on the contact details provided) by Friday, Sept. 4. When picking up their trees, registrants should stay in their vehicles and open their trunk so the attendant can place the tree inside.
The event will go ahead rain or shine.
