It’s never too early to plan for Santa’s arrival.
Santa Claus has been visiting Oakville for 78 years, but the town’s cherished Christmas parade originally started as a way to encourage shopping downtown.
The Oakville Santa Claus Parade is back on Nov. 14, celebrating its 78th anniversary and becoming one of Ontario’s longest-running Christmas parades.
While organizers are currently seeking volunteers, floats, marching bands, and community groups for this year’s event, the parade’s beginnings show just how much Oakville – and the holiday season – have transformed over the years.
The first Oakville Santa Claus Parade was set up in 1948 by Bill Hughes, who was then president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
The aim was simple: get people to come downtown and shop.
<p Almost eight decades later, the parade still draws crowds into downtown Oakville, although it has shifted from a business promotion into a significant community celebration.
The Town of Oakville now manages the parade with help from a volunteer committee, local businesses, sponsors, and community organizations.
This year’s theme will be “North Pole Sweets and Treats!” and festivities kick off at 9 a. m.
Organizers are in search of volunteers along with entries from community groups, marching bands, and anyone interested in making a float. Volunteer applications close Oct. 26 while applications for bands, floats, and walking groups wrap up on Nov. 1.
