Originally, the Holy Trinity Catholic High School section erupted when long-time emcee Dave Pond announced that they had won their first-ever overall championship for Young Canada Day.
However, just moments later, Pond – whose father George was one of original announcers for this tradition decades ago – admitted he had made an error, noting that Delhi District Secondary school had actually claimed victory for a second consecutive time, which led to mixed feelings among Raider supporters.
“We were trying to calculate it,” said Delhi teacher and coach Jodi Snowden. “As coaches, we thought it could go any way.”
“I love it because everyone is getting better,” added Snowden, whose daughter Marley finished second in girls’ road race for Simcoe Composite School. “Which is great because when competition improves, you improve too.”
With an impressive showing that matched well with day’s rodeo theme, Delhi secured first place in special effects and boys tug-of-war. The Raiders also managed to surpass both Holy Trinity and Simcoe overall in tight competition after all three schools tied for top spot – something unprecedented in Young Canada Day history. By combining fast pulls from both boys’ and girls’ teams, the Raiders earned crucial points along with third place finishes in homecraft and second place positions cheering.
“It comes down to second and third because you get points for those,” Snowden explained. “These points are incredibly valuable, and here at Delhi we always aim for participation so we remind them every bit counts.”
Classify overall standings saw; Simcoe Sabres capturing silver medal placing them second while Holy Trinity Titans came up third.
Pond felt especially bad about confusion surrounding results since he took complete responsibility afterwards.
“The sheet was filled out correctly; I just announced it incorrectly,” he clarified. “I don’t want (people) ever think there are tricks happening – people love conspiracy theories , but this falls squarely onto me.”
“My father who’s now ninety-two has been announcing since event began witnessed this mix-up,” he remarked.
