The Ontario government has announced funding aimed at improving infrastructure and making repairs at the Chatham-Kent Community Health Centres, Westover Treatment Centre in Thamesville, and facilitating quicker ambulance off-loading at hospitals in Chatham-Kent.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault recently revealed a total of $361,063 in provincial funding for the Chatham-Kent Community Health Centres and $30,538 for Westover Treatment Centre in Thamesville from the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund.

Pinsonneault pointed out that this funding is part of Ontario’s larger investment of nearly $15 million through the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund (CIRF) to support upgrades and maintenance at 67 community health service providers throughout the province.

He mentioned that this investment will enhance access to services for residents in our communities.

“Investing in the infrastructure of our community health centres means ensuring these important local services have the safe, reliable spaces they need to serve patients and families,” said Pinsonneault.

The province has indicated it is committing around $64 billion towards major health infrastructure over the next decade.

This initiative is part of the government’s plan to kick off more than 50 significant hospital projects across Ontario, which will provide about 3,000 new hospital beds to improve access to quality care while building a connected, people-first healthcare system.

Pinsonneault also shared news of an additional $54,600 through the Dedicated Offload Nurses Program aimed at hiring nurses and other qualified health professionals specifically focused on helping with patient off-loading from ambulances in emergency departments. This effort aims to lessen delays paramedics face when bringing patients into hospitals.

He expressed pride in seeing ongoing provincial investments that strengthen emergency care both here in Chatham-Kent and across Ontario.

“This investment will help make sure paramedics in Chatham-Kent can spend less time at the hospital and more time where they’re needed most – responding to 9-1-1 calls and helping people in our community,” Pinsonneault stated. “By supporting dedicated healthcare professionals to help offload patients, we’re improving access to emergency care while making better use of our paramedic resources when every second counts.”

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Trevor Jones emphasized that this investment ensures residents have prompt access to emergency care while keeping paramedics ready for their next call.

“By providing dedicated support to help patients transition from ambulance care to hospital treatment, we can reduce unnecessary delays and keep paramedic crews on the road serving our community,” Jones noted. “Our government is taking practical steps to enhance Ontario’s emergency care system, back our frontline healthcare workers, and ensure Chatham-Kent has what it needs when people require assistance most.”

The program is designed so that paramedics can return to their communities faster and respond more quickly to their next 9-1-1 call.

The Ontario government mentioned it has significantly reduced ambulance offload times by about 68 percent since peaking in October 2022 while increasing ambulance availability for 9-1-1 patients throughout the province.
