4-H Ontario is recognizing a woman from Brigden for her dedication as a volunteer.
Tami Langstaff mentioned that she has been involved with the Lambton 4-H Association since 2022.
Having spent time with the youth development organization in her teenage years, Langstaff explained that her current roles include being the treasurer, secretary, membership coordinator, and leading several clubs.
These clubs range from one for six- to eight-year-olds called cloverbuds to others focusing on skills like crochet, baking, and sewing, she added.
“I actually learned some of these clubs as a leader so I can learn along with the kids,” she noted, mentioning many are similar to home economics classes.
“Things they don’t teach anymore in the schools,” Langstaff remarked.
Other clubs focus more on livestock and agriculture topics.
Langstaff is one of six recipients of the outstanding new volunteer award in Ontario. She was selected for having been part of 4-H for less than five years while exemplifying values such as clear thinking, service, healthy living, and loyalty, according to a news release from the provincial organization.
One winner was selected from each of the province’s six regions. Lambton is part of region six, which also includes Chatham-Kent, Elgin, Essex, Middlesex and Oxford counties.
Former award winners choose recipients based on a point system; Gay Lea Foods sponsors this initiative, according to the release.
“Tami is one of the backbones of Lambton 4-H, effortlessly balancing administrative leadership with passionate hands-on volunteerism,” said Sarah Syer, volunteer and president of Lambton in the release.
“She has helped to revitalize local programming, managed massive membership growth and secured our association’s future by mentoring the next generation of volunteers.”
Sandi Shaw, another board member from Lambton stated that Langstaff prioritizes youth and encourages older members to take up leadership roles.
The club focuses on empowering young people ages six to 21 by providing them with leadership skills and hands-on learning experiences, Langstaff explained.
“I love that 4-H does this for the youth.”
Lambton’s association offers 25 different clubs. She mentioned there will be a rally and sign-up day on Jan. 10 from 1-4 p. m. at the Wyoming fairgrounds.
Additionally, an online fundraising auction is scheduled from Nov. 22 to Dec. 5. More information will be available through their Facebook page she said.
