[ad_1]OPP IMAGE - Driver charged with stunt drivingNIPIGON, ON - A 29-year-old driver from Brampton is facing charges for stunt driving and speeding after officers with the Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police allegedly recorded a vehicle going 61 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 11-17. According to law enforcement, an officer using radar detected a silver Volkswagen Jetta traveling at 131 km/h in a zone where the limit is 70 km/h around 7:41 p. m. on September 30, 2026. The driver has been charged with:Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed. Speeding - 131 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.Police issued an immediate suspension of the driver's license for 30 days and impounded the vehicle for two weeks. The individual is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on a later date. The police have not disclosed the driver’s name or any specific court date. The allegations remain unproven in court. The accused is considered innocent until proven guilty. Why excessive speed can qualify as stunt driving In Ontario, laws regarding stunt driving include excessive speed, even if there's no claim of racing against another vehicle. Under Ontario Regulation 455/07, traveling at least 40 km/h over the limit on roads with posted speeds below 80 km/h qualifies as stunt driving. In a zone marked at 70 km/h, that threshold starts at 110 km/h. The alleged speed in this incident was measured at 21 km/h above that threshold. Police do not need to allege that a driver performed stunts like burnouts for an excessive-speed charge to apply. Roadside sanctions are separate from convictions The suspension and impoundment reported by OPP take effect prior to any court ruling on the charges. They do not imply guilt. Ontario's roadside penalties for stunt driving include a license suspension lasting for 30 days and vehicle impoundment for up to two weeks, even if the car belongs to someone else. Additional penalties may follow if convicted. What are the penalties upon conviction? If convicted of stunt driving in Ontario, individuals face these possible consequences:Consequence Potential penalty or requirement Fine $2,000 to $10,000 Jail Up to six months First-conviction licence suspension One to three years Demerit points Six Driver education Mandatory driver improvement courseA jail sentence isn't guaranteed but can happen depending on what the court decides based on evidence presented and applicable laws. If there are repeat convictions, longer license suspensions apply: three to ten years for a second conviction; lifetime suspension possibly reducible after ten years for a third; and non-reducible lifetime suspension for four or more convictions. The police haven’t shared details about this driver's history. These repeat-offender provisions are general information and shouldn't be interpreted as describing this particular case. Insurance and everyday consequences Ontario also warns that being convicted of stunt driving can lead to significantly higher insurance rates or make it hard to find coverage altogether. If someone depends on their ability to drive for work or family needs, having their license suspended can create challenges beyond just legal issues. The charges mentioned by police fall under provincial Highway Traffic Act violations. Stunt-driving charges should not be confused with Criminal Code offenses. OPP urges motorists to report aggressive driving Nipigon OPP emphasizes that both enforcement and public education play important roles in combating aggressive driving behaviors. Authorities encourage anyone who sees aggressive driving behavior to call 911 but advises making reports safely without following or confronting other drivers directly.[ad_2]Source link
