The redevelopment of one of Ontario’s most charming downtown areas is set to start soon.

Work on Oakville’s long-awaited Towne Square Revitalization Project is tentatively planned to begin the week of Sept. 14, marking the beginning of a roughly year-long overhaul of one of the community’s most well-known public spaces.

This $7.5-million project will change Towne Square right in the heart of Downtown Oakville, with an expected completion date in September 2027.

While major updates are coming to the square itself, town officials assure visitors and businesses that they won’t have to wait a full year for downtown Oakville to feel normal again.

Construction will unfold in carefully thought-out phases designed to keep downtown open and accessible throughout the project. Businesses, residences, and other key locations will stay reachable, while construction staging and worker parking will be moved away from busy areas to ease congestion.

This strategy comes after extensive discussions with local businesses, the Downtown Oakville BIA, community partners, and residents. The town council approved the “Optimal Phasing Plan” in May after pausing the project earlier for more public feedback.

The work will also take a break during holiday season, with construction likely halting in November before picking up again in early 2027, weather permitting.

When it’s all finished, Towne Square will look quite different.

The redesigned area will include amphitheatre-style seating for community events, a unique water feature, raised planters, extra seating options, new trees, and improved landscaping.

The main lawn area will also see updates; new decorative lighting and accessible paving will enhance its look and make navigation easier.

This initiative aims to create a greener and more welcoming gathering spot right in Downtown Oakville.

Towne Square has served as a meeting point for over 35 years and has become essential to downtown’s character by hosting community events while offering residents and visitors a place to relax together.

Originally approved back in 2018, redevelopment was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic issues starting in 2020. The project faced another pause in 2025 for further consultation before council finally greenlit this updated phasing plan this spring.

The town emphasizes that keeping Downtown Oakville operational during construction is crucial.

Decorative hoarding will enclose active construction zones while designated entry and exit points ensure access for customers. Wayfinding signs will guide visitors toward open shops and restaurants along with other amenities.

Noise control measures are planned as much as possible; extended work hours might only be used if necessary.

The Downtown Oakville BIA’s annual Holiday Tree Lighting event will still happen at Towne Square in 2026. Winter festivities are set for Centennial Square on Navy Street instead during this time period.

Starting spring 2027 onward, part of George Street between Lakeshore Road East and Church Street will close until construction wraps up so it can support various downtown activities whenever feasible.

Access to both CIBC parking lot and Municipal Lot 3 remains unaffected during this time frame.

Another familiar element from Towne Square-the Millennium Tower Clock-will be removed prior to construction but safely stored away until revitalization is finished when it returns home once again!

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton referred to this project as an investment into the future development of downtown living spaces!

“The Towne Square revitalization will create an even more welcoming and vibrant gathering place for residents, visitors, and local businesses to enjoy for years to come,” Burton said.

For a historic main street known for its beautiful lakeside setting along walkable boutique-lined streets, the upcoming year may bring some disruption; however, if everything stays on track according to town plans, the result should transform Towne Square significantly without shutting down its picturesque surroundings! p >INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies
