US President Donald Trump introduced what he described as a “damn good” AI chatbot, but it soon attracted attention for challenging some of his controversial political statements.
The following day, however, it stopped responding to certain political inquiries.
“Hello, America. Whatever you need from government, start here,” says the America. gov platform, which Trump launched on Tuesday to make government information and federal services more accessible.
The chatbot quickly began disputing Trump on sensitive topics like the 2020 presidential election, which he incorrectly claims to have won, and the January 6, 2021 insurrection that involved a violent mob attacking the US Capitol.
“On its first day, America. gov used facts and official documents to challenge some of the misleading narratives and political framing about immigration and elections heavily pushed by the administration that created it,” stated the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas.
“Initial analyses indicated that America. gov generally offered evidence-based responses supported by government records, even when those records contradicted claims made by Trump and his administration.”
On Tuesday, when asked if there had been widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, the chatbot replied: “Official federal assessments after the 2020 presidential election did not find fraud at a scale that changed the outcome.”
Democratic lawmakers quickly highlighted the chatbot’s responses regarding the election.
“Finally, a straight answer from someone in the Trump administration,” Senator Adam Schiff of California posted on X on Tuesday with a screenshot of the chatbot’s statement confirming that former president Joe Biden had won the 2020 election.
However, on Wednesday, when asked about the same issue again, the chatbot changed its response. “I do not provide political commentary or analysis of past elections,” it said.
It wasn’t clear if adjustments were made by Trump’s administration to stop the chatbot from debunking him. The White House didn’t comment right away.
“America. gov will continue to be updated to provide Americans with accurate and reliable federal information and resources,” said a statement from The White House to US media outlets.</
