The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R. O. P. E.) Squad is seeking assistance from the public to locate a convicted murderer who escaped from a Kingston prison last week.
According to a statement from provincial police, the 49-year-old man “walked away” from the Collins Bay Institute on Sept. 24 and hasn’t been seen since.
Mason Jenkins was convicted and is serving a life sentence for murder as well as possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
As reported by The Chatham News, a local outlet, Jenkins was found guilty in 1998 for killing his 18-year-old sister.
He is described by police as white, approximately 5’9″ tall and weighing around 255 pounds, with brown eyes and shaved hair.
In comments made to City News, Correctional Service of Canada emphasized that it takes all escapes very seriously.
“When an escape occurs, an arrest warrant is issued and shared with our law enforcement partners, who are responsible for executing it. We work closely with them to ensure the offender is apprehended as quickly as possible,” it states.
The service noted that all inmates are assigned a specific security level. The agency mentioned that inmates can be reclassified based on evaluation tools, specialized staff assessments, and evaluations to gain more independence.
“The environment of a minimum-security institution is designed to foster the skills needed to function in a setting with minimal supervision. This is why the perimeter is clearly defined but does not include a fence,” they added regarding the incident.
An internal investigation into how the escape happened is currently underway.
Jenkins has been known to frequent areas in Kingston, Kitchener, and Chatham, Ont.
If anyone sees him, they are encouraged to call the R. O. P. E. Squad at 416-808-5900.
