City officials and police in Guelph are looking into a homecoming street party that attracted thousands of University of Guelph students after things got out of hand, resulting in several injuries and the call for the police tactical unit.
Video from the off-campus gathering on Saturday showed attendees throwing items into large crowds, while students reported glass bottles, metal water bottles, sticks, and other debris flying through the air.
Some students told they decided to leave as the situation worsened.
Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie expressed his disappointment over what happened.

Police mentioned that emergency responders treated multiple people for injuries like cuts and lacerations, along with responding to several intoxication-related medical calls. The authorities indicated charges have already been filed, with more possible as investigators analyze footage from the event. Similar issues in previous years led Queen’s University to pause its traditional homecoming for a few years before moving festivities to fall reading week. The cleanup efforts were ongoing in Guelph following the weekend event, with repairs expected for damaged walls and buildings. Students who attended mentioned that the situation escalated quickly as more people arrived. “People were throwing sticks and bricks; it got out of hand for sure,” one student said.
