A 57-year-old man from Whitby, Sean Farro, has been charged by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) for allegedly promoting violence and hatred against the Muslim community online. The arrest comes after the DRPS Hate Crime Unit conducted an investigation into reports of disturbing social media posts made under the username ‘Sean Strife’. These posts allegedly encouraged acts of violence against Muslims.
Farro faces charges of uttering threats and inciting hatred in a public place, under provisions of Canada’s Combatting Hate Act (Bill C-9). This act, which has strengthened the Criminal Code protections, targets hate-motivated crimes, especially those involving intimidation and public promotion of hatred.
