Ontario is rolling out two new publicly funded prenatal screening tests aimed at enhancing care for expectant mothers and minimizing unnecessary medical procedures.

BORN Ontario and Prenatal Screening Ontario shared details about these new blood tests, which are part of the province’s $9.8-million investment in prenatal screening services.

These tests analyze a blood sample from a pregnant individual to determine the fetus’s blood type, assisting healthcare providers in identifying pregnancies that may require extra treatment or monitoring.

The two new tests include:

Fetal RHD screening: This test helps establish whether Rh D-negative pregnant individuals need Rh D immune globulin (Rh IG), a treatment used to prevent complications from mismatched blood types. Alloimmunized fetal blood group genotyping: This test aids in managing care for pregnant individuals who have certain antibodies that might endanger their babies.

Being Rh D-negative means your red blood cells lack a specific inherited protein called the Rhesus D (Rh D) antigen.

Prior to these screenings, all Rh D-negative individuals received Rh IG treatment without considering their fetus’s blood type.

The introduction of these screenings enables doctors to assess whether that treatment is necessary, reducing unnecessary interventions and helping preserve Rh IG, which is a limited resource.

“Our government is ensuring Ontario families have access to innovative and world-class prenatal care,” said Health Minister Sylvia Jones. “The introduction of non-invasive fetal blood type screening is another step forward in providing expectant parents with the best possible care while strengthening Ontario’s leadership in pregnancy and newborn health.”

These tests will also help spot pregnancies at risk for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), a serious condition where maternal antibodies attack a baby’s red blood cells.

“By better identifying which pregnancies require intervention and monitoring, we can tailor care more effectively and improve outcomes for both pregnant individuals and babies,” said Dr. Barbra de Vrijer, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist.
