Last week, police came to the rescue of a raccoon stuck in a sewer grate in Burlington.

The Ontario Provincial Police shared details about the incident on Instagram.

“Last week, sharp eyed drivers alerted Burlington OPP members to a raccoon that got in a little over their head,” the OPP said in the post on Tuesday.

Bystanders noticed the trapped raccoon around 5 p. m. on Sept. 15 and called emergency services, according to reports from the OPP.

The officers named the raccoon “Rocky” and shared a picture of its head peeking out from the grate.

To assist, police closed off the left lane of the ramp from eastbound Highway 403 to Highway 407 in Burlington so they could “give a helping hand and free up Rocky who fled the scene, seemingly unharmed.”

Officers opened up the catch basin and released Rocky shortly after.

It’s not clear how Rocky ended up trapped like that.

Raccoons are great climbers and often get attracted by food smells coming from human trash, compost, or recycling, according to information on the Toronto Wildlife Centre’s website.

However, they rarely get “trapped” inside garbage cans-even large wheeled bins-most will leave overnight if you keep the lid slightly open.

You’re more likely to see raccoons high up on roofs, trees or utility poles. They usually won’t come down during busy daytime traffic but tend not to get stuck, as per what the centre mentions.

This isn’t an isolated incident; there was at least one other case of a raccoon caught in a grate. Back in 2017, city workers saved a “rotund” raccoon from a sewer grate in Zion, Illinois.
