Xi Jinping’s Visit to the White House Amid U.S.-China Strains

Washington – This week, President Trump is extending a friendly greeting to Chinese President Xi Jinping as the U. S. seeks to limit China’s access to semiconductor chips for artificial intelligence growth. The two nations are also figuring out if their delicate agreement on tariffs will last, while worries rise over China’s ties with Iran and Russia.

Xi’s visit to the White House marks his first in over ten years and will kick off with a state arrival ceremony on Wednesday, featuring Mr. Trump alongside U. S. military personnel.

On Thursday, the two presidents will hold an official meeting followed by a state dinner. Xi’s wife, Peng Liyuan, is part of the delegation as well.

The last time Mr. Trump and Xi met was in May during a state visit hosted by Xi in Beijing.

What to expect on the schedule

Mr. Trump greeted Xi and his wife at Joint Base Andrews late Wednesday-an unusual moment where a sitting president meets a foreign leader directly at the airport rather than waiting at the White House.

A military band performed as Xi and his wife stepped off an enormous Air China jet while the American president and first lady stood ready on a red carpet below them. The arrival ceremony was brief and included a flyover of two B-1 bombers; Mr. Trump and Melania left about ten minutes later.

On Thursday morning, Melania Trump will host another welcoming ceremony for Xi and his wife on the South Lawn of the White House. According to officials, nearly 500 service members from all branches of the U. S. military will participate in this event.

The flags of both nations will be displayed on the South Portico as part of this ceremony. The U. S. Marine Band is scheduled to play both nations’ anthems before Mr. Trump and Xi deliver remarks.

This arrival event is also expected to include a military flyover featuring a B-2 Spirit bomber accompanied by four F-22s.

While Mr. Trump meets with Xi, their spouses are set to tour the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art on Thursday before attending that evening’s state dinner together.

The following day, Friday, both couples will have tea at the White House prior to visiting the National Archives before concluding their visit.

China experts say not much progress expected

Experts suggest that major policy breakthroughs from this meeting may not happen. James Lewis from the Tech Policy Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis remarked that there “isn’t much of a formal agenda” for these leaders’ discussions.

“I’m not expecting too much – I don’t think anyone is,” Lewis said. “This largely seems like it’s more for show; it’s mostly just cautious leaders talking.”

“I don’t see significant policy achievements coming out,” stated Jake Werner from Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
“Trump loves putting on shows,” Werner added further explaining that he feels he’s developed a strong bond with strongman Xi Jinping-a relationship he values highly-and wants to prevent any misuse of power after last year’s incident when China limited access to rare-earth elements which caused American factories problems.”

Mr. Trump’s often spoken positively about his relationship with Xi calling him “a great leader,” claiming they’ve always managed to resolve disputes amicably during past interactions.

As far as potential disagreements during this week’s discussions go: Lewis referred to them as focusing around trade issues related specifically around three topics – trade policies regarding technology exchanges along with Taiwan matters.
