CAMEROON – For a long time, Canada played a supporting role in global affairs. It was a skilled and seasoned contributor, but didn’t usually attract attention when world leaders convened at the U. N. each September.

This year, the nation of 41 million is stepping into a new role on the world’s biggest diplomatic stage.

After a groundbreaking speech to the World Economic Forum in January, Prime Minister Mark Carney has emerged as a prominent voice for what he and others refer to as “middle powers.” He’s called for these nations to unite in order to refresh and uphold the international order while safeguarding their interests during times when larger powers like the United States flex their muscles.

He’s proven willing to take action in response to U. S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, insults, and casual remarks about annexation. Carney rejected what he deemed unacceptable trade demands from the U. S. and walked away from negotiations last month. By taking this stance, he is reevaluating Canada’s long-standing reliance on U. S. trade and partnerships and exploring other opportunities – Canada might even become the first associate member of the European Union.

“Partners are working with Canada because Canada’s predictable, reliable and principled in a world that’s anything but,” Carney told Canadian reporters during a news conference at the U. N. Tuesday as the General Assembly kicked off its major meeting.

It’s the most important annual gathering of the international community. For Carney, it presents an opportunity to showcase Canada’s vision of “values-based realism” that combines both principles like freedom, human rights, and sustainability with practical alliances that may not align entirely with every value.

That’s straightforward talk for an arena often filled with either careful diplomacy or grand rhetoric-sometimes alarmist or overly idealistic-or both. And Carney’s message is resonating.

He’s making swift moves and forming coalitions

Canada along with six other nations launched a new coalition Monday aimed at advocating for economic cooperation and promoting international collaboration similar to what the U. N. strives for. An air traffic control issue at New York airports prevented Carney from attending the “partners for multilateralism” launch event at U. N. Monday night; however, his schedule for Tuesday included personal meetings with Jordan’s king, presidents of Chile and Angola, as well as an Emirati cabinet minister.

He also co-hosted a meeting focused on achieving a two-state solution regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and committed 100 million Canadian dollars ($71 million) towards humanitarian aid and security funding for Palestinians. Last year Canada joined over 150 countries in recognizing Palestinian statehood despite opposition from Israel and its main ally, the U. S.

When asked if he spoke with Trump or any administration officials on Tuesday, Carney said he saw this large gathering of leaders as an opportunity to “meet those whom you don’t normally see.” He did attend Trump’s address at the assembly where no mention was made of Canada-the country sharing borders with America across the longest international border in existence-and now embroiled in an escalating trade dispute.

After speaking Wednesday at a meeting about oceans issues at the U. N., Carney will return to Canada for other obligations. Foreign Minister Anita Anand plans to deliver Canada’s speech at the U. N. on Saturday.

In an interview Tuesday she mentioned that her address “will be very much about implementing the middle power strategy” articulated by Carney-who notably stated at World Economic Forum that as great power rivalries increasingly shake up international relations, “middle powers must act together because if we’re not at the table we’re on the menu.” (There isn’t an official list defining “middle powers,” but it’s typically understood to refer to countries not classified as superpowers or their proxies yet holding some influence due to diplomatic strengths.)

Carney’s “message resonates with many audiences particularly those in global North,” says Srdjan Vucetic from University of Ottawa’s International Affairs department.

He noted that Canadians also respond positively toward prime minister’s leadership style which has earned him high approval ratings since taking office back in March 2025. Many citizens feel frustrated by Trump’s comments suggesting their nation should become America’s “51st state,” his references calling Lake Ontario “Lake America,” along with his trade policies affecting them directly. In Toronto , neighborhoods display lawn signs encouraging eligible American expatriates vote absentee while one coffee shop even replaced Americano drinks on menus labeling them instead as Canadiano.

Carney aims for non-U. S. trade expansion

At age 61 , former central bank governor holding doctorate degree economics intends double down non-U. S. trading efforts within decade period. Last week , he hosted hundreds investment firm executives during Canadian summit hoping secure deal India among others by year’s end.

His government highlighted various security , defense , economic agreements forged past year alongside envisioning potential bridge between EU Pacific Rim nations through commerce initiatives together moving forward.

Some doubts emerged concerning approach taken internationally particularly when being first prime minister visit Saudi Arabia since over twenty five years following predecessor Justin Trudeau prior government harshly critiquing kingdom regarding human rights record leading five year long diplomatic rift restored full relations recently established back again during 2023.

During July trip visits , expressed deeply caring about human rights emphasizing no point lecturing anyone instead choosing engage constructively without endorsing actions taken domestically abroad whatsoever previously done before publicly criticizing openly standing against violations regularly occurring consistently ongoing worldwide too so far observed constantly happening globally today still continuing onward forward progressing ahead strongly moving bravely forth finding solutions fitting everyone involved around globeat-large altogether now presently available everywhere all around us all!..

At press conference held earlier this week there reiterated philosophy actively confronting realities instead waiting passively wishing changing situations better future could arrive soon someday somehow magically overnight effortlessly appearing whenever wanted expected always hoped came true never happened yet anyways still remains unrealized.COPYRIGHT INFO LATER: Copyright © 2026 The Associated Press – All Rights Reserved Material broadcast rewritten redistributed permission granted beforehand otherwise completely prohibited without authorization.Source link
