In a troubling event in Whitby, Ontario, a 19-year-old named Alexander Parfitt was taken into custody after making threats online about attacking a synagogue. Durham Regional Police were notified by a law enforcement partner and quickly carried out a search warrant at Parfitt’s residence on September 19, 2026. This arrest comes after an earlier incident where a shooter fired shots outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, injuring an officer.
The Belleville shooting took place during Yom Kippur, an important Jewish holiday, with around 25 members present inside the synagogue. Luckily, none of the congregants were harmed; however, Const. Jeff Smith is still in critical condition. Due to these events, Durham police have stepped up patrols at places of worship during the Jewish high holidays to help ensure community safety.
