DUBAI: The Palestinian movie “Thirteen in Gaza” has been awarded the NETPAC Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, given by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Pacific Cinema.
The 2026 NETPAC jury was led by Mara Matta, along with Richard Fung and Panagiotis Kotzathanasis, who praised director Hosam Abu Dan’s work in a statement released on Sunday.
“Against unfolding genocide, ‘Thirteen in Gaza’ by Hosam Abu Dan turns suffering into neither spectacle nor victimhood, but into riveting images of life in all its complexity. A brave, intimate film that announces a major new voice in cinema,” the statement read.
Featuring Firas Al-Masri, Ghassan Salem, Hanna Atallah, and Mariam Ziyara, the film tells the story of a father and his teenage daughter as they navigate daily life in Gaza.
Set in 2025, it follows a bombing that destroys 13-year-old Raghad’s home and takes the lives of her family members.
“As she enters puberty in an overcrowded displacement camp without her mother, privacy, or access to basic sanitary care, her father, Abu Raghad, is drawn into a dark black-market economy run by an influential trader named Khalil,” reads the film’s official logline.
Shooting this 77-minute movie was just as challenging as its storyline suggests. Abu Dan shared his experience with Asharq Al-Awsat earlier this month.
“The film was shot under extremely difficult conditions amidst war and limited resources. We filmed whenever circumstances allowed us to do so and tried our best to find locations that matched the film’s needs while keeping our crew safe. We were only meters away from attacks by occupation soldiers,” he explained.
Produced by New Scene for Media Production and backed by the Doha Film Institute along with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, this film marks the first fiction feature shot in Gaza in 12 years.
