With municipal elections just around the corner, outgoing North Perth Mayor Todd Kasenberg is looking back on his time in office.
Kasenberg expresses pride in several achievements, including strengthening the local asset management plan. He points out that this has become essential for all municipal governments to manage future costs related to building or replacing infrastructure.
“There is still a massive infrastructure gap in any municipal government in Ontario. There’s no municipal government that’s got it all laid out and ready and the money in the bank for all that lies ahead because we never planned that way before,” Kasenberg explained.
Kasenberg mentions that many large projects now require years of planning before they can realistically be completed, particularly in smaller communities. He adds that enhancing social services and driving economic development has been a significant focus during his mayorship. This includes recent successes like launching the United Way enhanced services centre in downtown Listowel, which also houses the new Music Hall Apartments affordable housing units above it.
As mayor, Kasenberg concentrated on improving social infrastructure while also bolstering economic growth, especially by supporting the agricultural sector.
“I think we are probably the only community in Ontario that has a dedicated Agriculture Co-ordinator who is employed by the municipality and is supporting the farmers and agri-food in developing their businesses and finding funds and grant opportunities for them, as well,” he said.
Kasenberg also shared his excitement about seeing the long-awaited dog park finally approaching completion after facing numerous challenges throughout its development.
“We now have a potential funder, council has now given direction just at this week’s meeting, and I can’t help but say I’m really thrilled and pleased around that; otherwise it was going to potentially be a regret, right?”
As he prepares to step away from municipal politics, Kasenberg had some words for the next council and for the community he’s served with pride over two terms.
“When I came to office, I coined that term ‘North Perth Proud’ and in my second term, I coined the term, and I think it’s still relevant, ‘North Perth Awesome’. If there’s a message I would send it’s always be attentive to the humanity of our community, stay rooted in our values but always keep our eyes looking to the future,” Kasenberg shared proudly.
Following Kasenberg’s retirement, longtime Deputy Mayor Doug Kellum will take over as mayor after running unopposed in North Perth for the October 26 elections.
