The City of Burlington is not pleased with the Ontario Land Tribunal’s recent decision to allow the quarry expansion in the Mount Nemo region.
City Council has voiced its opposition to the plan, citing concerns over potential environmental damage to groundwater, wildlife, and nearby residents.
A passionate group of local residents, along with various environmental organizations, have been against this expansion for years. The area is part of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve.
“This is shocking, devastating for the community. This is not necessary,” Mayor Marianne Meed Ward tells CHCH News.

“We at the city and the residents provided thousands of pages of evidence, of potential risks to the environment, to health, to air quality, water quality and we just don’t know how this happened.”
Nelson Aggregate, a supplier of crushed stone, intends to expand the quarry west and southward, adding many more acres to its current size.
The land tribunal determined that the company’s proposal addresses both environmental and operational concerns.
The company argues that this expansion is essential for providing aggregate stone needed in Hamilton and across western GTA.
